The Geography Green Schools Project was initiated to actively promote Geography as the “The Missing Link” for sustainable development.
This Project aims at equipping Senior Secondary school students, beginning from age 13 years, with critical skills of geography, geospatial science and technology for sustainable development. It is a technologically driven project that facilitates the mentoring, networking and communication between educators and other education stakeholders. GIS Konsult Ltd., a notable e-technology company in Nigeria, identified a gap in the education sector and fostered a collaboration with the Association of Nigerian Geographers, the Environmental Research Institute ESRI, the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE), Innov8xions and other notable education and industry stakeholders to develop and promote the Geography Green Schools Initiative.
After a resolution passed by its council, the Association of Nigerian Geographers have actively supported and promoted the Geography Green Schools Initiative since 2015.
Through this project, members of the Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG) have adopted and mentored schools in the six geopolitical zones simultaneously. All these activities are fostering the course of Geography science and technology towards attaining the sustainable development goals of the UN; hence, the relevance of Geography Green Schools Project in Nigeria.
The Geography Green Schools Project is evolving into a global education initiative for sustainable development, starting with Nigeria and spreading later to the entire African continent and ultimately worldwide.
